Aging Gracefully

Aging gracefully.  How does that phrase fall on your ears?  For many, the term itself is a contradiction.  The mere thought of aging often engenders anxiety, uncertainty and all manner of thoroughly unpleasant and uncomfortable feelings.

I mean, for many of us the idea of adding the word "gracefully" to the word "aging, provides as much allure as the proverbial, "putting lipstick on a pig".

So why should you even consider thinking about it?  For starters, none of us gets out of here alive.  And everything else being equal, having more years to live beats the heck out of having fewer, right?

Every day you are fortunate enough to be drawing breath, you are, by definition, CHRONOLOGICALLY aging.  But as I discussed in Benefits of Meditation,  your biological and psychological ages are not tethered to the calendar.  Far from it!

So while your time on this earthly plane is, inescapably, finite, your ability to bloom, savor, and contribute is not.

In fact, you have the capacity to actually reverse the aging process! You can become more youthful in critical areas, such as attitude, beliefs and self care, that have powerful positive impact on your quality of life.

This waterlily, which I was lucky enough to commune with and photograph, is a lovely reminder that some of our most beautiful and spectacular moments occur in the evening of our lives

"Aging Gracefully"..."What's in a Name?"

Frankly, I have no real attachment to that particular phrase.  Full disclosure--I use the term, "aging gracefully" because more people search on it and I want you to be able to find me.  If there are other phrases that tickle your fancy more--say:

  • positive aging
  • conscious aging
  • aging well or
  • s-aging, for example,

use them.  And I'd be delighted if you'd like to share them with me and other visitors to this site!  Scroll down the page for your opportunity to do so.

The real point is to find ways to make the years you have after mid-life become some of your richest and most satisfying ones.

Making the Rest of Life the Best of Life

As a card carrying member of the Baby Boomer generation, I have a very personal interest in doing some serious myth-busting on what it means to grow older.

In the pages to come, I'll be posting numerous ways you can take charge of that process.  You'll discover ideas, techniques, and programs that will support and nourish you--physically, mentally, psychologically and spiritually as you GROW...older.

So let's rock 'n' roll!

First up--Conscious Aging and the Conscious Aging Program, which I am delighted and proud to be a licensed facilitator of. It was developed by the Institute for Noetic Sciences (IONS, for short).

It is a life changer.

Now it's your turn!

Share your most empowering and/or most cringe-worthy ways to describe the process of growing older.
